Is Hair micropigmentation a Surgical Procedure?

Hair micropigmentation is an application that is used to fix some aesthetic problems caused by hair loss, sparse hair, or alopecia. It is a non-surgical application. Hair micropigmentation is done by using special inks and equipment to simulate the look of hair on the scalp. It is not correct to say hair micropigmentation is a surgical procedure. This application can be done on both men and women. It can be done on the eyebrows too. On this aspect it has some similarities with permanent make-up applications. Most important point of differentiating is the type of inks and machine used in the applications. Although it is sometimes confused with hair tattoos, it should be known each application is done using different types of ink and machines. Inks used in hair micropigmentation are specially made for this application. Hair tattoos are subject to deformation and color change due to sunlight and other external effects. This problem is not present with inks used in hair micropigmentation.

Men mainly lose hair due to stress and genetic disposition. Women lose hair due to pregnancy, surgeries or stress. There is an important difference between the application that is done on men and the one done on men. While men want the application to simulate shorter hair on the scalp, women want to cover the color differences caused by hair loss.

Women don’t need to cut their hair short for this application. Micropigmentation on women is done in order to balance the color difference with hair and scalp.

Hair micropigmentation and hair transplantation are complimentary. If enough hair thickness couldn’t be achieved with hair transplantation, micropigmentation can be used to simulate hair in the sparse areas to achieve a better look. Hair micropigmentation can be done before or after hair transplantation. Hair micropigmentation will not harm the hair roots.

Differences between hair micropigmentation and transplantation can be summed as:

  • Hair transplantation is a surgical operation, hair micropigmentation is a non-surgical application.
  • Hair transplantation is used to transfer follicles from one part of the head to another, hair micropigmentation is used to simulate the look of hair using special inks.
  • Hair transplantation takes up to 12 months to show its full effects while hair micropigmentation takes 5 days after completion.

It is possible to cover the scar or stitch marks using hair micropigmentation. Hair micropigmentation can be used to cover areas that have been caused by over collection by hair transplantation. This allows people to be able to cut their hair short in these areas.
